Passenger Vehicles
New York drivers have a wide variety of driver's license classes to select from. These classes cater to a variety of needs for driving and the different kinds of vehicles. You can also tow vehicles with a maximum trailer load of 10,000 pounds. Drivers can add endorsements on their class C license for more possibilities for employment. These endorsements could include passengers (P) tank (T) or hazardous materials (H). These endorsements are typically obtained by passing additional knowledge exams and specific skills tests.
Passenger vehicles in the class C license for non-CDL are limited to transporting up to 16 passengers, including the driver. Drivers are also required to limit the number of passengers under 18 they transport, unless it is an immediate family member or someone over 18. Teen drivers who hold a driver's license class C and are younger than 18 years old must always have a parent in the vehicle.
To be qualified for a non-CDL class C license you must be 18 years old or older and pass a medical test. Additionally, you must meet the federal requirements for driving on interstates or for the transportation of hazardous materials.
A class M license is available for those who wish to drive motorcycles or mopeds. It is only available for drivers who are junior, and it is only valid in New York. Towing Vehicles
A category C + E license is one of the most comprehensive HGV licenses that you can get which permits drivers to operate a variety of large trailers and vehicles. This includes single and double-trailer vehicles with the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 8,250kg. This permits drivers to drive articulated vehicle like lorries, coaches and the less basic drawbar vehicles, also known as artic or tipper trucks.
As well as passenger cars and trucks drivers who have a category C licence can operate small commercial vehicles, such as vans, dump trucks, and straight or box trucks. The DOT has formulated specific rules that govern the transportation of hazardous materials. These rules include the requirements for shipping labels, papers placards, labels and other issues. A driver who violates these rules could be charged with a DOT violation that could result in fines and penalties.
